Shrewsbury School

BRIEF:

To inspect all trees within the school site – create a detailed inventory with accompanying maps and recommended appropriate management works.

DETAILS:

Founded in 1552, Shrewsbury School is one of the leading private schools in the UK with a world-class reputation for excellence and innovation. It’s historic campus is located on the banks of the River Severn, close to the town of Shrewsbury.

Our brief

The school initially approached Barton Hyett Associates in 2014 to undertake a tree survey, helping them understand their tree stock and identify any hazards presented by the trees on their estate.

This would enable their estates management team to develop plans to effectively manage their tree stock in order to preserve the historic landscape for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations.

Detailed inventory and mapping

Working methodically and using our experience coupled with up to date technology, Barton Hyett Associates undertook a detailed survey of the whole site.

All trees were given a unique numerical tag for easy identification. Around 850 trees were identified, inspected and recorded.

The data was then compiled into a report along with accompanying plans. The information contained can be easily interrogated by the school and links to satellite images of the trees provided.

Resulting actions

Along with the detailed inventory of trees, Barton Hyett Associates were able to advise on essential, recommended and future work to ensure that the school’s tree stock remained safe and healthy for the benefit of all site users and the wider environment.

Since the survey, the estates manager has reported few tree failures, even in significant storm events.  The survey and analysis also found that the school’s tree stock is rather evenly-aged and that there is a need to diversify the age range in order to maintain a good level of tree cover in the landscape in future.

Barton Hyett Associates have the experience and expertise to be able to advise on future maintenance and planting initiatives also.
